What an amazing experience! I hope your 4th grader told you all the highlights of the trip. We packed a lot into those three days! Our class is writing a book about our trip. Also, all of the chaperones are downloading our photos into one spot. Once that is done, we will share all of them with you.
"We have a wonderful opportunity with Little Sugar Creek Community Garden on May 3rd. They are hosting a community garden tour. We have been asked to reach out to all former students who served at the garden and this is where you all come in. This was a new partnership for us two years ago so your kiddos were the first two grades to work at the garden. Nadine envisions the students to work as "docents" of the garden from 10:30-11:15 on Saturday, May 3. If your family would like to participate, email Mr. Luft at jluft@tescharlotte.org."
We have enjoyed examining the parables of Jesus together during Lent in Fourth grade Faith Studies. We read the parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin and wrote our own present day parables in small groups. We acted out the parable of the Prodigal Son and discussed its meaning to us. We read the parable of the Good Samaritan and listed ways we can help our neighbors at Trinity. We created skits in small groups for the parables of the Sower and Mustard Seed. We participated in a dramatic reading of the parable of the Workers in the Vineyard and then helped our school by doing some weeding in the butterfly garden. Last week we read the parable of the Great Banquet and created pictures of the table we are all invited to by God. Your child should be able to give you their definition of a parable, and they should also be able to tell you where they see God in a parable and where they see themselves. Through our discussions and study we have learned from each other that there are many ways to understand each parable and that each one is a special story from God with a message that can relate to our lives today.
Fluency with math fact combinations is so important! It is frustrating for the students who have to stop to think about a math fact when they are working to solve a multi-step problem. We encourage your kids to "hunker down" and really work to meet these goals. Here is a reminder of the benchmarks:
4th Grade
Demonstrate mastery of addition and subtraction facts at a timed rate with a minimum of 96% accuracy: be able to complete 50 addition and 50 subtraction facts in 2 minutes)
Demonstrate fluency with multiplication facts to 12 x12 with a minimum of 96% accuracy and be able to complete 50 facts in 2 ½ minutes
Understand the inverse relationship between multiplication and division and the resulting “fact families” of four equations: be able to complete 50 division facts in 3 minutes, 96% accuracy rate.
The best ways to practice are with flash cards, having someone call out facts, playing war with cards, or taking timed tests. Here is a great website for printing timed tests for your child to take at home: http://www.math-drills.com/
